In the wake of the success of the album, the Greatest Hits collection was released in four variations. The greatest hits box set was released in August 2000 and features an 18-track CD with two discs of bonus material. The second greatest hits collection was released in November 2000 and features the same track selection, but also contains a 60-page booklet of photos, essays, and rare audio clips. The third greatest hits collection was released in June 2001 and is the expanded version of the second greatest hits collection, featuring eight additional songs. The final version, released in August 2001, features a different track selection, but the same song list as the second greatest hits collection. This version also included an expanded booklet with a more significant amount of photos and audio tracks. The second, third, and fourth greatest hits collections all include a second disc containing previously unreleased material.
The second greatest hits collection was certified platinum on 4 April 2001. It was the best-selling album in the United States and Canada for the year 2000 and also became the best-selling album in the United States. It was the second album to be certified platinum in the 2000s.
The first version of the greatest hits collection was certified platinum on 23 March 2000 by the RIAA, but it was not certified platinum for shipments of 1 million units until October 2001. At the time of its release, the compilation set was the best-selling album in the United States since the album Abbey Road by the Beatles in 1969. It was the first album to sell over 4 million copies and the first to be certified platinum in the 2000s. It was also the third album overall, behind Happiness and Tapestry by the Eagles, and was the first album to be certified multi-platinum by the RIAA in the 2000s. The RIAA had certified the album for shipments of 3 million copies in the United States by 21 March 2001.[7]
The album also was certified 12× Platinum in Canada, 10× Platinum in New Zealand, 8× Platinum in the UK, 5× Platinum in Australia, and Platinum in the Philippines.[5] Greatest Hits reached number one on the US Billboard 200, the UK Albums Chart, and the Canadian Albums Chart, and was certified as the 10th best-selling album of 2008 in the United States.[7]
On 16 May 2006, the album was certified Platinum by the BPI for selling over 600,000 copies in the UK, and later awarded a gold certification from the BPI in December 2006 for selling over 100,000 copies in the UK. This was the band's third UK Platinum album, and their first since Fly in 1992. It was also the third UK 'greatest hits' album to do so, behind the Beatles' red and blue compilations and the Eagles' Long Flight Back.
As of October 2008, Greatest Hits has sold over 37 million copies in the U.S. alone, placing it as the second best selling 'greatest hits' album in history behind the Eagles' Long Flight Back and ahead of the Beatles' Greatest Hits. 827ec27edc
