With this in place you can then create an external OWA for your users on the Forefront Client Access Server (FCAS), or the External OWA for users in a Forefront Unified Threat Management environment, or a Forefront Protection for Exchange Server (FPES) Forefront Identity Manager for Exchange 2010 deployment. The key here is to ensure that the FPES, FCAS and TMG are all on the same subnet.
Like with the FPES for Exchange 2010, if you are on a multi-subnet environment you need to be careful of the versions of TMG and Exchange Server that you can have installed at the same time. If you have different pools of Exchange 2010 servers, or Exchange 2010 R2 and Exchange 2010 SP1 servers, or Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010 servers, you cannot install both TMG 2010 and FPES on the same server as either FPES or TMG will cause an error. The workaround is to install TMG 2010 on an Exchange 2010 R2 server, and then install FPES as a standalone solution for Exchange 2010 on a different Exchange 2010 R2 server.
You can also create an internal OWA for your users on the FPES, by following this section of the FPES installation guide:http://www.forefront.com/support/kb/solutions/fp10-for-exchange-2010-unified-threat-management-v5.0-client-access-server-provisioning.html
So, the question is where do you want to go with this? By adding Exchange Edge you now have a single point of entry for Exchange 2010 users which is able to enforce a number of AD based and Forms Based authentication scenarios, for example:
Henrik’s article is a great walkthrough for getting up and running with Forefront TMG 2010 without prior knowledge of Exchange Server 2010 and for a beginner it’s quite intuitive to understand and quick to follow. The following walkthrough is based on his article with minimal changes to the text. There are also a few additional steps to ensure the servers are configured to make maximum use of the Forefront TMG 2010 integration.
The other new technology I want to mention in this article is Microsoft Identity Manager 2010. This is a brand new product within Microsoft and gives access to all of the user information Microsoft stores for you. This is available as a supported service or can also be used as a stand-alone product.
This week Henrik also wrote about his experience installing TMG 2010 and how he was able to combine many different technologies to give an exceptional user experience and user interface to his users. It is a very informative article and I would encourage you to give it a read.
After doing some troubleshooting on getting this working for my customer I have gone back to the drawing board for my customer. It seems that the Exchange Proxy Service (EPS) and the Microsoft Forefront Online Protection for Exchange Server 2010 (FPES) services (now known as Exchange Edge in TMG 2010) do not like each other. Whilst the Forefront Protection for Exchange Server 2010 (FPES) service does not have a dedicated port, the Exchage Proxy Service (EPS) does and therefore cannot start if the EPS service is already running. 827ec27edc
